The Creek

I spend so much time fishing a certain creek near my house, some people call me crazy. Yeah, the fish are small and not really noteworthy (I do hold the record for largest fish caught out of the stream, however - a 2lb. 14.5 inch rainbow) but the experience of fishing this creek is what keeps me coming back.

This creek just has a beauty to it that's so serene and natural - the worries of life seem to slip away when I'm fishing up here. This creek is amazing.

Anyways, I went up and tried some flies - an orange bodied caddis - to no avail. I switched up tactics a bit and threw some salmon eggs on a treble hook into the current, with a lead sinker about 18 inches up the line.

Instantly, I had fish fighting for the right to eat the eggs! I caught 8 or 9 fish in about an hour up there, all using this same technique.

Like I said, they're small. But another reason I keep coming back to this creek so often is the beauty of these native rainbows. Nowhere else in the world have I caught a native rainbow that looks as pretty as these do. They're just absolutely gorgeous fish! Based on the amount of action I saw today, and the other fish I saw in the holes, the creek should have plenty of decent 14-16 inchers come August this year.

I'm going to be heading out every day next week, so look for some posts detailing a lot of other great rivers and lakes!

Diamond Fork Trip - March 2013

I do a lot of fishing on Diamond Fork and Thistle, usually hitting those streams once a week. I like to get out after school as much as I can, and Diamond Fork and Thistle provide great fishing pretty close to home. Anyways, Thistle has been a finicky little stream as of late, but DF has yielded some good results.

This guy was a really nice 15.5" Brown, weighing in at nearly 2 pounds. Skinny, for a river fish even, but it's been cold lately and that't not too surprising. I've done really well catching fish here with a size 4 Panther Martin. I find a good hole, and cast the lure above into the rapids, and reel it about medium speed down through the slower and calmer water. Usually, they'll strike as soon as the lure gets into the calmer water.

DF has been really good some days, and absolutely empty on others. I've had more luck with spinners than I have with jigs or anything else on this river.

This river always looks pretty, ,no matter the day. This is one of my favorite places to fish around here in Utah County.
